Local Outreach
Plus Power has been developing Mountain Peak since 2021 with a focus on meeting the needs of the Kansas grid and the customers it serves. Our team has participated in multiple public hearings related to our project specifically and to the regulations proposed by Saline County to develop regulations to address public input. Throughout the facility’s life, we are committed to working with Saline County and various local stakeholders, including Emergency Management, Saline County Rural Fire Districts, community members, local stakeholders, and policymakers.
Community Benefits
Battery energy storage systems like Mountain Peak tend to reduce electric ratepayer bills and improve the function of existing electric infrastructure. The facility will bid its services into the Southwest Power Pool market, competing against all generation sources. The facility will charge the batteries during periods of excess energy available on the existing electric grid. It will discharge energy during peak demand periods, such as extreme weather events. Operation of this facility will increase electricity supply at these critical periods, creating competition and reducing the cost of electricity. Battery energy storage supports local reliability as intermittent generation resources increase in the state. Mountain Peak will help make the grid more efficient and reduce the need for expensive additional transmission line construction to serve new intermittent generation.
The Mountain Peak Energy Storage facility will be a good neighbor and a valuable asset to the surrounding community for decades to come. The project will provide necessary capacity to the region with no air polluting emissions and a small footprint in the community, strategically located adjacent to existing electric infrastructure. As a static facility with insignificant traffic and minimal municipal services, the Mountain Peak facility will have little impact on neighbors. Significant project benefits to the community include:
High-paying construction jobs benefiting Saline County and nearby areas.
Expanded property tax base and revenue for the local district generating new revenue for local schools, emergency services, and other county services.
Improved grid resiliency helping Kansas families and businesses maintain reliable power during critical times.
