Project Overview
Mountain Peak Energy Storage is a standalone battery energy storage system, using American-manufactured batteries, strategically sited in Saline County, Kansas, directly adjacent to Evergy’s 345kV Summit substation and existing transmission lines. In general, these types of battery facilities help to eliminate the need for new infrastructure. The battery facility will enhance the reliability of the local electrical grid by storing energy and discharging it during peak demand periods, such as extreme weather events or emergencies. This improves transmission efficiency and helps stabilize energy costs for families and businesses without requiring new power plants. Similar to other facilities in the area, Mountain Peak will have a perimeter fence surrounding critical energy infrastructure. The facility is expected to have several full-time employees. Operation of the facility will focus on supporting the local electric grid and will not result in air emissions or water emissions.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2029 using American-manufactured batteries, with completion targeted for 2031 to support Kansas’s long-term reliability needs. The site’s proximity to existing infrastructure makes it an ideal location for new energy development.
